Spex Education – UV Rays

We have all probably heard the term before – UV radiation, or UV rays – and have a general idea that it can be harmful to our skin and overall health. But what are UV rays exactly? And did you know they are just as harmful to our eyes as our skin?

UV rays is short for Ultraviolet Radiation – this is a type of energy produced by the sun. Unlike light or heat, we can’t sense UV rays, which is how we can end up with that accidental sunburn.

UV radiation doesn’t just affect our skin. UV rays can also damage our eyes if we aren’t careful. More than 99% of UV radiation is absorbed by the front of our eyes. This can lead to corneal damage, cataracts, macular degeneration with prolonged exposure.

So how do you protect yourself? The best method is a pair of sunglasses that can block UV radiation. But before you think that these sunglasses might have to compromise your style – think again! As long as the lenses are able to block UV rays, your frame style doesn’t matter. That means you can be stylish and protected, no matter what.

Come on down to Spex by Ryan today and our helpful staff will make sure you’re ready to go for summer!
